The Department of Agricultural Extension in Satkhira is eyeing to export 500 tonnes of different varieties of mangos like, Gobindabhog, Gopal Bhog, Himsagar and Lengra to several European countries and the United States.
In line with the target, some 600 kgs of mangos are currently under process at central processing laboratories of the department at Shyammpur in Dhaka for export to Germany.
SM Khalid Saifullah, the department’s additional deputy director at Satkhira, on Monday told the Business Post, “This year, the department has set a target of exporting 17,00 tonnes of mango to the US, Germany, the UK, Italy, and France. Primarily we have selected 600 kgs of mangos of Gobindabogh variety for screening at the central processing lab. After rigorous process, we will ship those mangoes to Germany.”
“With the help of two local NGOs – Uttaran and Solidaridad – we have trained 300 farmers on food agricultural practice to ensure the export quality of the mango,” he added.
He also said that the department had set the target of exporting 1,700 tonnes of mango.
According to the department at Satkhira, 13,100 farmers have produced mangoes in more than 5,000 orchards in different parts of Satkhira.
The department in Satkhira has set a target of producing 40,000 tonnes mango this year.
