SC lawyer apologises for 'derogatory' post on CJ, judiciary

Advocate Syed Mamun Mahbub on Thursday offered an unconditional apology before the Supreme Court for posting derogatory remarks about Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and the judiciary on Facebook on August 11.

Mamun Mahbub apologised unconditionally through a video conference during the hearing on a contempt of court rule issued by the court against him before a full bench of the Appellate Division of the SC headed by the chief justice on Thursday.

After the hearing, the Appellate Division fixed August 23 on the contempt of court rule.

Earlier on 12 August, the Supreme Court (SC) asked Mamun Mahbub to appear before it on August 20 as he allegedly made derogatory remarks about Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and judiciary on Facebook.

A six-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order.

The SC also issued a rule seeking an explanation as to why legal action should not be taken against the lawyer on a charge of contempt of court over his comment.
