SC orders to stop plying of battery-run easy bikes on highways

The Supreme Court on Monday ordered to stop the plying of battery-run easy bike on the highways across the country.

The apex court passed the order modifying the High Court's previous order which was given on plying of easy bikes.

The Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order.

"Easy bikes cannot ply on highways but as per the government's rules, there is no bar on plying of such bikes on other roads," said the Appellate Division in its order.

Besides, the bench directed to dispose of the rule issued by the High Court regarding the matter.

Based on a writ petition on December 15 of Baagh Eco Motors' President Kazi Zashimul Islam, the High Court ordered to identify easy bikes and remove such bikes from the road.

Representatives of Bangladesh Electric Three-Wheeler Manufacturing and Merchant Association appealed against the order.

Following the hearing, the Appellate Division on Monday amended the word 'road' in the order of the High Court and added 'highway'.
