The educational institutions of Kurigram, Panchagarh and Chuadanga districts were closed on Thursday after the temperature dipped below 10 degrees Celsius amid biting winter cold all over the country.

The districts’ education offices took the decision following the government’s directive to close the schools if the maximum temperature fell below 10 degrees Celsius.

According to Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) Tetulia office, the lowest temperature was recorded at 8.7 degrees Celsius at 9am on Thursday.

Kurigram District Education Officer Md Shamsul Alam said they closed the schools from pre-primary to secondary level. “We will reopen the schools if the temperature rises over 10 degrees Celsius.”

Panchagarh district Assistant Primary Education Officer Saifuzzaman said schools were asked to remain closed on Thursday. “But Sunday’s decision will depend on the temperature. However, there was no announcement to close secondary schools.”

Chuadanga district Education Officer Md Ataur Rahman said they closed the secondary schools after observing that the temperature was below 10 degrees Celsius. However, no decisions were taken regarding primary schools.

Education authorities in any district can shut down schools if the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius, said the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) and the Directorate of Primary Education (DPE) in separate circulars on Tuesday.

According to the circulars, the regional deputy directors in consultation with the district education officers can keep the educational institutions under primary and secondary levels shut if the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius in any district.
