A three-storey building in Dhaka’s Science Lab area partially collapses after an explosion on Sunday, killing three people and injuring 30 – Shamsul Haque Ripon

The explosion at a building in Dhaka's Science Laboratory area that left three people dead and many injured on Sunday may have been caused due to explosion from gas accumulated there, Fire Service and Civil Defence Director General (DG) Brigadier General Md Main Uddin said.

“It was a massive accident and investigations are still underway,” he told the reporters after the opening ceremony of Pallabi Fire Station in Mirpur DOHS of the capital on Monday morning.

When asked if the incident could be sabotaged, the Fire Service DG said, “I myself sought the help of the army to find out whether the incident at Science Lab was an accident or not. After inspection, their bomb disposal team said there were no signs of sabotage or explosives.”

About the existing chemical warehouses in Old Dhaka’s Nimtoli and Churihatta, where horrifying fire incidents happened previously, Main Uddin said “Government has taken initiatives to remove them. No new NOC or permission is being issued to set up chemical warehouses in Old Dhaka. The ones operating are all illegal.

“We will investigate them and soon report to the ministry.”

The Fire Service DG also mentioned that they always stand by the side of common people and have the required modern equipment. “We are training our workforce to make them more skillful.”
