Protesting students - as part of their ongoing movement demanding quota reform for government jobs - are blocking the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Jatrabari. They took up positions there since Thursday morning.
The movement of vehicles plying in and out of the city remains suspended.
Protesters are not even allowing rickshaws, motorcycles, and bicycles. This has caused severe suffering among the daily commuters, especially the office-goers.
Earlier on Wednesday around 5pm, clashes with the police began at Jatrabari and Shanir Akhra areas of the capital. At that time, the toll plaza was set on fire.
The fire service could not extinguish the fire immediately due to facing opposition from the protestors. Even though the fire was extinguished later, it gutted nearly everything in the area.
After midnight, the entire area came to a standstill as the police clashed with the protesters. A large number of police were deployed to remove the agitating protesters from the road.
Fires were seen burning on both sides of the road from Jatrabari to Shanir Akhra.
