Former student leader and one of the key organisers of the 1971 War of Independence Serajul Alam Khan has passed away. He was 82.

Serajul Alam, who was undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), breathed his last around 2:30pm on Friday, said DMCH Director Brig Gen Md Nazmul Haque.

The political thinker was put on life support around 11:15pm on Thursday as his health condition deteriorated, Nazmul said, adding that he was suffering from respiratory problems and various old-age complications.

Serajul Alam Khan, who played the key role in the formation of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, was admitted to Samorita Hospital on May 7 with respiratory problems. Later, he was shifted to DMCH on May 20.

Widely known as "Dada" and "Dadabhai", Serajul was born on January 6, 1941.

He was a founding member of Swadhin Bangla Biplobi Parishad alias Nucleus. He founded and led Mujib Bahini (aka BLF) with Tofael Ahmed, Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni, and Abdur Razzaq.
