Seven people, including five from the same family, were killed and another person was injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a battery-run autorickshaw on the Jashore-Magura highway in Lebutola area of Jashore on Friday evening.

The deceased were identified as three-year-old twins Hasan and Hossain, their sister Khadiza, 7, mother Sonia Khatun, 38, grandmother Mahima Khatun, 60, and autorickshaw driver Imran, 26. One of the deceased still remained unidentified.

Jashore Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Belal Hossain confirmed the matter to The Business Post.

“The accident happened around 6:30pm. Police and Fire Service personnel recovered the bodies and took them to Jashore General Hospital,” he said.

According to locals, a Magura-bound passenger bus of Royal Paribahan collided head-on with a Jessore-bound easy-bike at Lebutola Bazar, leaving three people dead on the spot and 5 injured.

Later, four more people succumbed to their injuries on the way to the hospital. All the deceased and injured were autorickshaw passengers.

“Police have arrested the driver of the bus involved in the incident,” the ASP added.

Jashore Deputy Commissioner Tamijul Islam Khan rushed to the hospital and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.
