Shahed 'bribed' Chisty to get loan

First Information Report (FIR) has revealed Regent Group Chairman Md Shahed had  bribed former Farmers Bank audit committee chairman Mahbubul Haque Chisty alias Babul Chisty 35 lakh taka to get 2 crore taka loan against his company.

The report reads that 2 crore taka was granted as loan for the purchase MRI machine for Regent Hospital. Shahed however embezzled the money.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) initiated a case against Shahed, Mahbubul and two others over the allegations on Monday (July 27).

The others accused in the case are Mahbubul's son Rashedul Haque Chisty and Md Ibrahim Khalil, a managing director of Regent Hospital.

The FIR further said, Shahed opened an account in the name of Regent Hospital with Farmers Bank on January 11, 2015 and applied for the loan placing a FDR worth one crore taka as collateral.

The next day, the loan application was hurriedly sent to the bank's headquarters without much verification.

On January 13, the bank's executive committee led by chairman Mahbubul Haque Chisty approved the loan in favour of Shahed.

A pay order of 2 crore taka was issued on Jan 21.

Just prior to the sanction of the money, Shahed deposited Tk 35 lac in the account of Bakshiganj Jute Spinners with Padma Bank's Bakshiganj branch on Jan 17, 2015.

The money was withdrawn by Rashedul Haque Chisty, the son of the company's managing director Mahbubul Haque Chisty.

Mahbubul, his wife Rosy Chisty, daughter Rimi Chisty and son Rashedul are the owners of Bakshiganj Jute Spinners.

ACC investigation found no business link between Regent Hospital and Bakshiganj Jute Spinners.
