Shaheed Noor Hossain Day was observed Thursday recalling his outstanding contributions to the anti-autocracy movement and restoration of democracy in the country.
Different political and socio-cultural organisations, including Awami League, organised various programmes marking the day.
Awami League leaders and activists paid homage to Noor Hossain by placing wreaths at Noor Hossain Square at Zero Point in Dhaka’s Gulistan area.
Led by Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, party's Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, organising secretaries Ahmad Hossain and SM Kamal Hossain, Publicity and Publications Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, Science and Technology Affairs Secretary Abdus Sabur, Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, Cultural Affairs Secretary Asim Kumar Ukil, Agriculture and Cooperative Affairs Secretary Faridunnahar Laily, and Office Secretary Biplab Barua, among others, were present during the placing of wreaths.
Munjata was also offered there followed by a discussion.
Obaidul Quader said the ruling party, led by its President Sheikh Hasina, continues its struggle to give the country's democracy an institutional shape.
"We continue struggling to institutionalise democracy under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina. Our struggle will continue," he said.
Later, leaders and workers of Awami League associates and like-minded bodies, including Jubo League and Chhatra League, also laid wreaths at the square.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasod) also paid tribute to Noor Hossain by placing a wreath at the Noor Hossain Square at 7:30am.
The party's Vice-President freedom fighter Shafi Uddin Mollah and Joint General Secretary Abdullahil Kaium were present, among others.
Left Democratic Alliance also paid tribute to anti-autocracy movement martyrs Noor Hossain, Aminul Huda Tito and others by placing wreaths.
Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) leaders and activists placed wreaths at Noor Hossain Square and Shaheed Aminul Huda Tito's portrait at the CPB office at Mukti Bhaban on Topkhana Road.
CPB President Mohammad Shah Alam, General Secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince and others were present.
On this day in 1987, Awami Jubo League leader Noor Hossain, who imprinted his bare chest and back with the slogans "Free democracy" and "Down with autocracy", embraced martyrdom in police firing during an anti-autocracy demonstration in the city's Zero Point, now known as Shaheed Noor Hossain Square.
Awami Jubo League leader Nurul Huda Babul and farmers' leader Aminul Huda Tito of Bajitpur in Kishoreganj were also killed in police firing during the mass movement for the restoration of democracy against autocratic rule.
The martyrdom of Noor Hossain and others during the mass upsurge of the late 80s expedited the anti-autocracy movement. In the face of the movement, the then autocratic ruler had to step down on December 6 in 1990.
Since then, the day is being observed every year as Shaheed Noor Hossain Day.
