Oikko Parishad panel leader, and also Adzi Trims Managing Director, Al Shahriar Ahmed is set to become the first ever elected president of the Bangladesh Garments Accessories & Packaging Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGAPMEA) for 2024-26 tenure.

In the polls, Oikko Parishad secured 14 directorial posts from Dhaka and Chattogram, while its rival Active Members Union panel secured 7 director positions.

Oikko Parishad panel leader Shahriar received 257 Votes, and Moniruzzaman Molla, a director candidate of Oikko Parishad, secured the highest 286 votes among candidates.

Giving his an immediate reaction, Al Shahriar Ahmed said, “We are grateful to our voters for keeping their faith on our panel. This is the time to meet our commitments denoted in our manifesto. Despite whoever won or lost, we will work together in the next two years.

“We believe that if we work together, we will be able to build a smart BGAPMEA. From now on, I am not the panel leader of Oikko Parishad, I am the would-be the president of all members. So, it is my responsibility to work for everyone.”

Conveying special thanks to PHP Family Chairman Sufi Mohamed Mizanur Rahman, the upcoming president of BGAPMEA, said, “His [Sufi Mohamed Mizanur Rahman] support and advice helped us ensure a landslide victory.”

The BGAPMEA, apex body of apparel backward linkage industry that contributes nearly $8 billion annually to Bangladesh’s exports, held its first ever election on Saturday following its 33 years of journey.

BGAPMEA election board Chief Md Razzaqul Islam announced the polls result in the evening of this day. According to the election board, among 460 voters, 425 exercised their voting rights in the polls. Sixteen votes have been cancelled, and all of those were from the Dhaka region.

Two panels, Oikko Parishad and Active Members Union, participated in the polls for 16 directorial posts for Dhaka and 5 for Chattogram.

The newly elected board of directors will now elect the president, first vice president, senior vice president and other office bearers. As the Oikko Parishad was able to secure a majority in the polls, its panel leader Al Shahriar Ahmed will be the BGAPMEA president.
