Women and Children Affairs Adviser Sharmin S Murshid on Sunday urged the guardians to protest against injustice and crimes and teach their children to take a stance against malpractices.
“We have to remember that we all have to work together to rebuild a broken society,” she said.
Sharmin, also social welfare adviser, said this while addressing the inaugural function of the Children Rights Week-2024 at Bangladesh Shishu Academy auditorium in the city, said a press release, reports BSS.
The Women and Children Affairs Ministry is observing the Children Rights Week through different programmes across the country with the theme “Our commitment is to protect the rights of every child” to make aware all about the children’s rights, protection and development. The week that started Sunday will end on October 5.
The adviser said it can never be forgiven what happened to the country’s children.
“But the courage that our children showed will remain as inspiration for us. Our Bangladesh should be for children,” Sharmin said, adding there will be playgrounds in every neighbourhood and parents would have no reason to be worried about their safety.
Save the Children Director Abdulla Al Mamun addressed the function as the special guest with Women and Children Affairs Ministry Secretary Nazma Mobarek in the chair.
Shishu Academy Director General Tania Khan delivered a welcome address at the event.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Abdulla Al Mamun put emphasis on establishing a separate “children affairs department” under the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs to protect the children rights at upazila and district levels.
He suggested the interim government prepare a mid-term action plan for the children.
Women and Children Affairs Ministry Secretary Nazma Mobarek said this year’s Children Rights Week has been dedicated to those children who embraced martyrdom during the July revolution.
Apart from observing the Children Rights Week, the Women and Children Affairs Ministry and Bangladesh Shishu Academy every year observe the World Children’s Day on the first Monday of October.
