Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been elected from Gopalganj-3 (Tungipara-Kotalipara) constituency in the 12th national election, for the eighth consecutive time.
Returning Officer and Gopalganj deputy commissioner Kazi Mahbubul Alam announced the results at 8.30pm tonight.
The prime minister bagged 2,49,965 votes while her nearest rival M Nizam Uddin Lascar from Bangladesh Supreme Party secured only 469 votes, said the returning officer.
Gopalganj-3 constituency encompasses Tungipara and Kotalipara upazila with 2,90,300 votes. Ballots were cast in 108 centres in the constituency.
Since morning, there were long queues of voters at polling stations to exercise their voting rights from the parliamentary seat in the 12th Jatiya Sangsad polls in a festive manner.
Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was elected from this constituency in 1954 election as a Juktofront candidate. Since 1986, Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina has been elected from this constituency for the eighth time, including this year.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had cast her vote at Dhaka City College in the capital on Sunday morning.
Asks not to bring out victory procession
Sheikh Hasina instructed her party leaders, workers and supporters not to bring out any victory procession after the announcement of the 12th general elections’ results.
"AL President Sheikh Hasina has already instructed the party leaders, workers and supporters not to bring out any victory procession and not to get involved in conflict with any candidate and his or her supporters after the announcement of the election results," AL Deputy Office Secretary Sayeem Khan told BSS on Sunday night.
