At least five workers died in a deadly fire that broke out at a shoe factory at Swarighat in Old Dhaka early Friday.

Identities of the victims could not be known immediately.

The fire started around 1:15am at the factory and spread around, confirmed Rashed Bin Khalid, duty officer at the control room of Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Eight firefighting units rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control around 3:00am, he said.

Later, the firefighters launched a search operation and found the five charred bodies from the first floor of the factory building, reports UNB.

The victims were fast asleep when the fire broke out, Rashed said, adding that the bodies have been sent to Sir Salimullah Medical College morgue.

A probe has been ordered to ascertain the exact cause of the fire, he added.
