Bangladesh Shop Owners Association on Monday said that shops and markets will instantly be shut down if healthcare guidelines are not followed.

The association’s president Helal Uddin conveyed the message to members of the organisation through a video release.

He said, “Shops and markets were opened following instruction of the government. We have noticed that shoppers are buying things wearing masks, following healthcare guidelines, and also maintaining physical distancing rules. Markets are being disinfected before and after the operations.”

“Since we are in a crisis, no negligence will be tolerated in this regard.”

“I request different market authorities to shut respective shops and shopping malls if healthcare guidelines are not followed,” he added.

Earlier on May 4, the government announced the reopening of shopping malls and markets from May 10.

It also set a number of guidelines including the installation of disinfection tunnels and thermal scanners, the mandatory wearing of masks and gloves by both sellers and buyers, and the maintaining of physical distancing at all times.

Amid the refusal of reopening of popular shopping malls and markets in different parts of the country in the coronavirus pandemic situation, some roadside shops and small markets reopened on a limited scale on Sunday after 45 days of lockdown that started on March 26.
