Md Siam Hossain, one of the key suspects in the murder of Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar in Kolkata, has been detained in Nepal.

A diplomatic source in Kathmandu confirmed to the media that Siam was detained by Nepalese police on Thursday, and the Embassy of Bangladesh in Nepal has already launched an effort to bring Siam back to the country.

Several Bangladesh Police officials involved with the investigation, on condition of anonymity, said they too have learned about Siam’s detention in Nepal, but they declined to formally comment on the matter.

Three people have so far been arrested in Dhaka and one in Kolkata in connection with the murder of lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar. According to a source in Kathmandu, the Kolkata police are also in contact with Nepal.

According to a source involved in the investigation of Azim's murder, Siam played an important role in the disappearance of Azim’s body after his murder in Kolkata on May 13. Siam then travelled to Nepal from Kolkata.

Akhtaruzzaman, alias Shaheen, who according to the police is the mastermind behind the killing, had too travelled to Kathmandu from Dhaka via Delhi on May 20. He later travelled to the United States via Dubai.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner (Detective Branch) Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid is travelling to Nepal on Saturday morning for further investigation into Azim’s murder, DB sources say.
