The Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Friday advised maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra to keep hoist distant cautionary signal number 1 as the depression in the Bay of Bengal turned into a deep depression.

The deep depression, that is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm already titled as Jawad, now lies over west-central Bay and adjoining area and is likely to move in a north-westerly direction, according to a special bulletin issued by the Met office.

It was centred about 1,165km southwest of Chattogram port, 1,105km southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 1,080km south-southwest of Mongla port, and 1,060km south-southwest of Payra port at 9:00am.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 48km of the deep depression centre is about 50kph rising to 60kph in gusts. Sea will remain rough near the centre of the deep depression, the bulletin said.

All fishing boats and trawlers over the north Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution. They have also been advised not to venture into the deep sea, it added.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department forecasted that the potential cyclonic storm, Jawad, is likely to reach the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts on Saturday morning.

The IMD warned that it is likely to cause very heavy rain in parts of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Gangetic West Bengal and damage standing crops, especially paddy, and inundate low lying areas, reports Hindustan Times.

Cyclone Jawad may be severe briefly on Saturday when it is near the coast (90 to 100 gusting to 110 kmph). Extremely heavy rain (over 20 cm) is likely in south Odisha and north coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is expected in north coastal Andhra Pradesh, north and interior districts of Odisha, and Gangetic West Bengal over the weekend.
