The country’s public universities will enrol students through a national merit list after holding a single admission test from the next year to reduce the suffering of the admission seekers.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) in a meeting on Monday took the decision regarding the admission test for the academic year 2022-2023 in the cluster system without any complexities, UGC sources said.

A total of 22 general and science and technology universities, including Jagannath University and Islamic University, Kushtia will participate in the cluster system admission test of the 2022-2023 academic year.

UGC high officials and vice-chancellors of 17 public universities attended the meeting with UGC Chairman Prof Dr Kazi Shahidullah in the chair.

At the meeting, the commission directed the VCs to hold the admission test and start the classes after completing the admission process quickly. The universities were advised to hold the admission test fairly and carefully in an easy and student-friendly manner.

The existing problems of cluster system admission tests and possible solutions were also discussed at the meeting. It also discussed how to overcome last year’s complications regarding cluster admission tests and how to make admissions easier and student-friendly.

The cluster method admission test was introduced in the 2021-22 academic year after bringing 32 public universities under it to enrol students on the basis of a merit list.

UGC Chairman Prof Dr Kazi Shahidullah said the people of the country have given us warm greetings for arranging the cluster admission test saying that it was a hassle-free and good system.

He said, “There are some problems in holding the exam in the new system but there is no way to back out from the method.” He asked the VCs and the admission concerned to be sincere because the cluster admission test is good and is accepted by all people.

UGC member Prof Muhammad Alamgir said 80 per cent of public universities are participating in the cluster admission test this year. He urged the universities to hold the cluster admission test and start the classes quickly.

Earlier, Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni at a programme in Kushtia on Wednesday said that students will be enrolled in universities by creating a national merit list after holding one admission test from the next year.
