A fire broke out at the Padma Oil Company depot in Narayanganj on Tuesday morning, injuring six people. Siddhirganj EPZ unit of fire service brought the blaze under control with the help of the depot workers within the hour.

The incident took place in the pump room of the depot located in Godnail Burmastand area of the district, Siddhirganj police station sources told The Business Post.

According to Fire Service and Civil Defence sources, the fire sparked from an electric short circuit around 9am.

The injured were identified as depot workers Golap, 29, Fazal Mia, 60, Shafiuddin, 59, Mozammel, 50, Nazmul, 25, and Siraj. All six were taken to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

“The depot workers brought the fire under control using fire extinguishers shortly after it occurred due to an electrical short circuit,” Padma Depot Godnail Branch Manager (Operation) Shahjahan Chowdhury told The Business Post.

Golam Mostafa, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Siddhirganj police station said that the fire did not cause any major damage.

“The injured workers are undergoing treatment. Their injuries are not severe,” he said.

Approximately 10-12 octane and diesel pumping motors and electric cables with an estimated value of Tk 13-15 lakhs were damaged during the incident, the OC added.
