A Shariatpur court on Sunday sentenced six people to death and four others to life in prison in a case filed for killing a local leader of Awami League, Habibur Rahman, along with his brother in 2001.
Two others were sentenced to two years’ imprisonment each.
Judge Md Showkat Hossain of Shariatpur Additional District and Sessions Judges’ Court passed the verdict on Sunday.
The court also acquitted 40 other accused in the case.
Habibur Rahman, joint general secretary of Shariatpur district unit Awami League and president of district lawyers’council and his brother Monir Hossain were shot dead at their home on October 5, 2001.
Later, Habibur’s wife Jinnat Habib filed a case with Palong police station accusing 54 people over the incident.
