The Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka has awarded six people with death penalty for killing retired Tangail school teacher Anil Kumar Das and his wife Kalpana Rani Das on July 26, 2017, by the teacher's stepbrother due to dispute over property.

Judge Abu Zafar Md Kamruzzaman of the Tribunal passed the order on Sunday.

The convicted are - Swapan Kumar Das, Jahidul Islam, Mohammad Farhad, Moniruzzaman Bhuiyan, Manjurul Islam, and Shayan Mia.

According to the First Information Report, Anil's stepbrother Swapan Kumar Das hired five men and killed the elderly couple to take control of 60 decimals of land belonging to him.

Earlier, on the night of July 26, 2017, Swapan along with five men entered Anil's house at Rasulpur village in Tangail Sadar and pressured him to sign a deed for handing over the property.

As Anil refused to comply, the six men smothered the 70-year-old to death using a pillow. Later, they killed Anil's wife Kalpana, 55, in a similar fashion as she walked in on them.

Next morning, their dead bodies were recovered from a covered well next to their house.

Later, the couple's son Nirmal Kumar Das filed a case with Tangail Model Police Station, accusing unnamed people.
