Some Bangladeshis had left their homes to join the Taliban militant group in Afghanistan, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Shafiqul Islam on Saturday.
"The Taliban recently called upon people everywhere to join their fight in Afghanistan. many people here have left Bangladesh responding to their call. Some of them have been arrested in India and some are still trying to reach there on foot," he said.
He made the remark replying to a question from reporters after visiting the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi No. 32 on Saturday morning.
"Everyone is now captivated inside the cyber world," he said, adding that militants are using this medium to recruit and motivate.
"We are trying our best to prevent the militants from doing any kind of miscreants, he further said.
Regarding the security arrangements on August 15, the DMP commissioner said police were on high alert to ensure foolproof security ahead of National Mourning Day.
"We are trying our best to avoid any kind of inauspicious incident," he said.
"August 15 is a very significant day for us. The militants can not reach the venue on August 15, but if anything could happen within two kilometres of the area, it could attract international media attention. We don't think any such thing will happen," the DMP commissioner added.
