With cyclone Hamoon expected to make landfall by Wednesday, Khulna, Barishal and Bagerhat district administrations have taken extensive measures to mitigate the disaster aftermath and ensure the safety of residents.

Shelters, medical team ready in Khulna

A total of 604 shelters have been prepared in all 9 upazilas of the district. Some 3,15,180 people can take shelter in these shelters.

Confirming the matter, Khulna District Magistrate Khandaker Yasir Arefin said that as part of the Hamoon mitigation, shelters have been prepared. Apart from shelters, 5,280 volunteers and firefighters have been prepared to provide quick service in Koyra, Paikgacha and Dakop upazilas. In addition, 80 medical teams are on standby.

The district magistrate further said that 32,000 packets of dry food have been stocked for people taking shelter in the shelters. In addition, Tk 7 lakh in cash, adequate food and water and 649 tonnes of rice have been stocked.

Koyra Upazila Chairman Shafikul Islam said that announcements have been made to alert the public in the area to reduce the damage caused by cyclone Hamoon. In addition, 118 shelters have been prepared in the upazila.

Barishal prepares 541 shelters

The Barishal district administration has prepared 541 shelters and 61 medical teams to combat cyclone Hamun.

Barishal District Disaster Management Committee Chairman Md Shahidul Islam confirmed this information at a meeting on Tuesday.

He said that 541 shelters have been prepared in the district, along with 61 medical teams. In addition, 322 tonnes of rice have been stored for immediate disaster response, and 770 tonnes of rice and Tk 9.36 lakh have been allocated for immediate food supply to the helpless victims.

The district administration also said that various organisations, including the Bangladesh Water Development Board, Fire Service, and Red Crescent, are on standby to offer volunteer service to help mitigate the situation.

In addition, there is a stock of sufficient quantities of safe water and dry food and ambulances in each upazila and district town.

446 shelters prepared in Bagerhat

Bagerhat district administration has prepared 446 cyclone centres and educational institutions to use those as shelters as part of the preparedness to face severe cyclonic storm Hamoon that may make landfall in Bangladesh between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Deputy Commissioner Md Khalid Hossain said this after a virtual meeting on the cyclone preparedness on Tuesday morning.

He said 10 control rooms have been opened along with the 446 cyclone shelters including primary and high schools, madrasas and colleges.

There are stock of 650 metric tonnes of rice and Tk 9 lakh in cash, he said, adding that all concerned have been instructed to remain alert.
