An ongoing special lockdown in Chapainawabganj has been extended for another week until June 7 to contain a sudden spike of coronavirus infections in the district.
Chapainawabganj Deputy Commissioner Manjurul Hafeez announced the extension at a press conference on Monday.
He said there was no alternative to continue imposing a lockdown as the infection rate in the district is increasing every day.
A special lockdown was enforced in the district earlier from May 25 to May 31. Announcing the lockdown, DC Manjurul Hafeez on May 24 said the special lockdown with an 11-point directive was imposed at the instruction of the Cabinet Division.
The measure came after Chapainawabganj, which shares border with West Bengal of India, reported an alarming 55 per cent positivity rate out of tested samples, said Manjurul Hafeez.
He described the virus situation in the district as 'severe' and implied that the Indian variant of the novel coronavirus might be responsible for the surge.
