Speech-impaired child drowns in under-construction tank

A speech-impaired child drowned in an under-construction tank at Charkhai Union of Beanibazar upazila in Sylhet district on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Samir Hossain, 9, son of local auto-rickshaw driver Gaus Uddin.

According to locals, Samir was roaming around Langlakona Government Primary School around 12 pm and fell in the waterlogged under-construction tank of a toilet of that school beside the road.

Locals spotted his body floating in the water and informed the police.

Officer-In-Charge of Beanibazar police station Hillol Ray said after recovering the body, it was handed over to the family without any autopsy upon their request.

Locals demanded speedy completion of the risky toilet construction of the school to avoid future accidents like this.

Assistant officer of the upazila’s primary education office Md Ashraful Islam said the engineer has been directed to complete the construction work of that unprotected tank as soon as possible.
