Rapid Action Battalion on Sunday arrested the owner of the speedboat that sunk in the River Padma hitting an anchored bulkhead leaving 26 of its passengers killed near Kanthalbari ferry terminal in Shariatpur on May 3.

RAB's legal and media wing director Commander Khandaker Al Moin said that their personnel arrested the owner Chand Mia alias Chandu Mollah alias Chandu at Keraniganj in Dhaka around 2:30pm.

Utilising the suspension on the movement of all passenger's vessels during the lockdown, Chand Miah was ferrying passengers between Mawa and Kanthalbari dodging the law enforcers to make more money, he said.

Chand Miah has three speedboats and had no valid documents for any of those, said the official.

Knowing the possible consequences, Chand Miah went into hiding immediately after the accident, he added.
