Three people, including a child and a woman, were killed and several others were injured after the driver of a speedy SUV lost control and the vehicle ploughed into a passenger shed in Dhaka's Khilkhet on Wednesday night.

The deceased were identified as Yasin, 9, Amrina Haque, 27, from Gazipur’s Kapasia, and Ujjal Pandey, 26, of Kazipara village under Moksedpur, Gopalganj.

Khilkhet Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Mosharraf said the accident occurred at the passenger shade adjacent to the foot-over bridge on the Airport Road at Khilkhet at around 9pm Wednesday, reports BSS.

“Yasin died on the spot while seriously injured Ujjal and Amrina were first taken to Kurmitola General Hospital and later to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for better treatment. But, the DMCH duty doctors declared them dead on arrival," he said.

DMCH police outpost in-charge Inspector Bachchu Mia said Yasin’s father M Sumon, 35, was also brought and admitted to the hospital with serious injuries.

A 27-year-old unidentified woman was admitted to DMCH in critical condition as well, he said.

The ill-fated jeep was seized right after the incident but its driver managed to escape the spot. However, the driver, Dishan, was arrested on Thursday in a case filed with Khilkhet police, said the police station’s Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Aminul Bashar, reports UNB.

SI Mosharraf said the bodies of the deceased were handed over to the relatives without autopsy following appeals by the families.
