Spice prices shoot up

Just ahead of Eid-ul-Adha, spice prices in the kitchen markets have shot up as onion and ginger is running wild.

Prices of cinnamon, clove, dry chilly powder and turmeric have increased in the market but cumin cardamom, garlic remained stable.

While talking to The Business Post at Karwan Bazar on Saturday, Abu Saleh, a Kalabagan resident, said, "I see the prices of everything are hiking. Prices of every spice are high this time compared with that of last Eid."

Retailers said, onion price has increased Tk 5 per kg. Local onion is not being sold below Tk 50 while Indian variety is being sold between Tk 30 and Tk 35.

Ginger price also shot up by Tk 15 to Tk 20/kg.

Business insiders told The Business Post that, imported ginger last week was selling at Tk 140 which is now being sold at Tk160 while local variety sells between Tk 140 and Tk 150 in the market.

Prices of cinnamon and cloves increased by Tk 100 to Tk 150 a kg. Cinnamon is now selling at Tk 500/kg to Tk 550/kg which was Tk 400 to Tk 500 in the last week.

Clove prices also shot up to Tk 100 to Tk 150 a kilogramme as clove is now being sold at Tk 800 to Tk 1000 which was Tk 700 to Tk 1000 in last week.

Dry chilly powder and turmeric prices increased slightly which by Tk 20 to Tk 30 per kilo landing the price at Tk 220 to Tk 260 for local variety and Tk 260 to Tk 320 for imported variety in the market.

Retailer Javed Karim, told The Business Post that, every year, we see that price of spices usually rises but this year we find uneven hiking and decline.

Abdul Wahab spice importer in Karwan Bazar said, "Price of some slices rises a bit. Cinnamon and clove prices are hitting the roof this year. Prices marked up in the market as demand is higher than the supply."
