SSC pass rate, GPA-5 both decline

The combined pass rate in this year’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations has decreased by 7.05 per cent, to 80.39 per cent from last year’s 87.44 per cent.

According to the results published on Friday, the number of examinees securing GPA-5 also decreased to 1,83,578 this year from 2,69,602 in 2022.

Education Minister Dipu Moni provided the details of the results at a press briefing at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka’s Segunbagicha in the morning.

Earlier, the education minister, Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury Nowfel and chairman of all education boards handed over the results to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office.

Results show that 20,41,450 examinees appeared in the SSC and equivalent exams from 29,714 educational institutions under 11 education boards and 16,41,140 of them came out successful. Among them, 7,96,404 are boys and 8,44,736 are girls.

The nine general education boards saw a combined pass rate of 80.94 per cent, the Madrasah Education Board 74.70 per cent and the Technical Education Board 86.35 per cent.

Girls outnumbered boys in terms of pass rate and GPA-5 this year too.

Data showed that 81.88 per cent of female students passed the exams, compared to 78.87 per cent of male students. Besides, 98,614 girls bagged GPA-5 and 84,964 boys.

Barishal Education Board secured the top position with a 90.18 per cent pass rate on average while Sylhet board was at the bottom with a 76.06 per cent pass rate among the nine general education boards.

The pass rate of Dhaka board is 77.55 per cent while it is 87.89 per cent in Rajshahi board, 78.42 per cent in Cumilla board, 86.17 per cent in Jashore board, 78.29 per cent in Chattogram board, 76.87 per cent in Dinajpur board, and 85.49 per cent in Mymensingh board.

This year’s SSC pass rate in Dhaka board is the lowest in 13 years.

Board officials said the poor performance of students in English and Mathematics affected the overall results of the Dhaka board.

Dhaka Education Board Chairman Tapan Kumar Sarkar said that the students’ poor performance in mathematics and holding this year’s exams in all subjects could be the reason for the low pass rate of Dhaka board.

In terms of GPA-5 obtainers, however, Dhaka board kept its consistency in securing the top position since the grading system was introduced in 2001 in Bangladesh.

A total of 46,303 students scored GPA-5 in Dhaka board; 26,877 in Rajshahi; 11,623 in Cumilla; 20,617 in Jashore; 11,450 in Chattogram; 6,311 in Barishal; 5,452 in Sylhet; 17,410 in Dinajpur; 13,177 in Mymensingh; 6,213 in Madrasah Education Board; and 18,145 GPA-5 in Technical education Board.

Results also show that the number of institutions with 100 per cent pass rate fell to 2,354 this year from last year’s 2,975. And the number of institutions with a zero pass rate is 48 this year. It was 50 last year.

Meanwhile, a total of 320 students out of 375 from eight foreign centres cleared the SSC exams with 85.33 per cent pass rate.

Data also showed that science group students have kept their consistency in securing the top position in terms of group wise results among nine general education boards with a 94.06 per cent pass rate, followed by 82.22 per cent from business studies, and 71.72 per cent from the humanities groups.
