The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection has held a joint meeting with egg producers (firms and corporate entities), agents, dealers and representatives from the Bangladesh Egg Producers Association to discuss the recent volatility in egg prices.

Director General (Additional Secretary) of the directorate AHM Safikuzzaman presided over the meeting, held at the TCB Building in Dhaka on Monday.

Safikuzzaman said, “The DNCRP conducts regular monitoring in markets and carries out drives to prevent anti-consumer activities. We conducted special drives on August 11, 12, and 13 in the city’s markets, including in Karwan Bazar and Kaptan Bazar.

“We have found a number of irregularities.”

DNCRP Deputy Director Abdul Jabbar Mondol said, “The directorate had found discrepancies in the cash memo of different egg-producing firms, lack of cash memo carbon copies, and not showing a price chart.

“When we conduct a drive at any wholesale warehouse, the others close down to avoid the authorities.”

Breeders Association of Bangladesh General Secretary Mahbubur Rahman said, “Eggs are a necessary commodity. If farms do not survive, consumers will not get eggs.

“Eggs reach the consumers after changing hands four times – from farmers to small traders to shopkeepers to consumers. We must all work together to maintain discipline in the sector.”

Bangladesh Competition Commission Member Md Hafizur Rahman, Director of National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate Mr Manjur Mohammad Shahriar, Deputy Director and Assistant Directors of National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Md Anwar Hossain, Director Of the Directorate of Livestock, DGFI Representative Md Shahinur Alam,  Representative of Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission, Representatives of FBCCI, representatives of NSI, representatives of CAB, representatives of egg producers (firms and corporates), representatives of Breeders Association of Bangladesh, representatives of various egg traders associations and journalists of print and electronic media were present at the programme.
