Issuing a note of warning against the extortionists, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun on Tuesday said stern action will be taken against all forms of extortion during the Eid.

“We will not tolerate any sort of extortion in any sector including the transport sector,” he said this while presiding over the overall law and order, security and traffic management meeting on the occasion of holy Ramadan and upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr at the police headquarters.

The IGP directed the field level police officers to carry out their duty to control commodity prices with sincerity. He emphasised on market monitoring and smooth movement of goods carrying vehicles, reports BSS.

“Everyone should be careful so that none can create any issue during the Ramadan and Eid and deteriorate the law and order. Officials should be vigilant so that no vested quarters can destroy communal harmony or cause untoward incidents by spreading rumours and misinformation in the cyber world,” IGP said.

He directed all concerned police units including highway police and district police to take preparations from now with the aim of making movement of homebound people smooth on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

The IGP also directed the highway police authorities to take measures to prevent passengers from being transported on the roof of buses or trucks, adding, “In addition to performing regular duties during the Ramadan, the law enforcers should be alert and vigilant during Iftar, Tarabi and Sehri times.

“Industrial police would have to be more vigilant about any man-made problems among the workers of the garment industry” he added.

Additional IGPs, heads of various units of Dhaka police and concerned police officers were present in the meeting.

Besides, Rapid Action Battalion, Anti-Terrorism Unit, Police Bureau of Investigation, Highway Police, Industrial Police, Chiefs of River Police, Commissioners of Metropolitan Police, Range DIGs, Superintendents of Police of all districts and Field Commanders of Specialised Units of River, Highways, Railways, Tourist and Industrial Police joined the meeting virtually.

In the meeting, the 104th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Children's Day will be celebrated on March 17. Police officials have been directed to ensure smooth security of the events organised on the occasion of Genocide Day on March 25 and Independence and National Day on March 26.
