The police rescued a newborn baby from the Parbisnupur in the Kalia upazila of Narail early Friday after it was reported stolen from the Khulna Medical College hospital 23 days back.

The baby was handed over to his mother Ranima Begum today. Turab Ali, husband of Ranima, relatives and officials of Khulna Metropolitan Police, among others, were present.

Officer-in-charge of the Sonadanga Model Police Station Momtazul Haque, told BSS that the police team acting on a tip-off went on an operation to the residence of a couple identified as Ranu Khanam and Lalon Molla at the Parbisnupur village in the Kalia upazila of Narail last evening.

Police personnel rescued the 23-day-old baby from their possession and arrested the couple.

The OC said the arrested couple bought the newborn baby from a woman with Tk 1.80 lakh from the capital on January 25 last as they have no child.

On January 24, Ranima Begum, a resident of Fakirhat upazila in Bagerhat gave birth to a baby boy at noon.

The baby went missing around 5pm after Ranima handed over the baby to an unknown woman in front of KMCH as her husband and other relatives engaged in a fight with an ambulance driver centering ambulance fare, OC said.

But the woman fled away along with the baby from the spot.

Turab Ali, the father of the baby, filed a case with Sonadanga Model Police Station accusing the suspects.
