The High Court (HC) on Sunday adjourned the hearing on the writ petition filed against seeking cancellation of Dhaka South City Corporation’s (DSCC) decision to relocate stray dogs.

A High Court bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Mohammad Ali passed the order on Sunday.

Barrister Saqeb Mahbub was present in favour of the writ petition while Additional Attorney General Murad Reza appeared for the state.

Earlier on September 17, the writ petition was filed with the High Court seeking cancellation of DSCC’s decision to relocate stray dogs.

Actress Jaya Ahsan, Avoyaronno, and People for Animal Welfare filed the petition.

Saqeb Mahbub, who filed the writ petition on behalf of the Animal Welfare organisations, said stray dogs cannot be removed from the city according to Section 7 of Animal Welfare Act 2019.

The writ petition also sought an HC rule seeking explanation why the DSCC’s decision should not be declared illegal, he said.

Secretaries to the Department of Livestock Services, Health and Family Welfare Ministry, Law Ministry and DSCC were made respondents, Mahbub said.

The writ was filed as DSCC recently had started to shift stray dogs from the city corporation area claiming that they are spoiling the city.
