Students of seven government colleges, including Begum Badrunnessa Government Girls’ College, blocked Bakshibazar road in the capital on Sunday protesting against rape threat by a bus staff to a female student as she offered half fare.

The demonstrators took to the streets around 9:00am demanding to realise their nine-point demands.

They suspended their demonstrations at noon giving a 24-hour ultimatum to arrest the bus staff and ensure half fare at public transports.

On Saturday, a student of Begum Badrunnessa College was allegedly misbehaved by the staff of Thikana Paribahan and threatened to be raped after she offered half fare to reach her destination.

In another incident, students vandalised 10-12 buses in the Science Laboratory area on the same day demanding half fare bus ride in the city for them.

Earlier on Thursday, hundreds of students of Dhaka College demonstrated outside their college demanding half fare bus ride.

On November 15, a college student was pushed off by a bus driver following an altercation over fare in the city's Rampura area. Protesting the incident, some students halted movement of 50 buses of Raida Paribahan that day.

The government increased the prices of diesel and kerosene by Tk 15 per litre on the night of November 3.

On November 7, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority hiked the fares for intra-city and inter-district buses by 26.5 per cent and 27 per cent respectively following an indefinite strike by the transport owners.
