Students staged a demonstration on Monday by blocking the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway after a teacher and two students were injured when they were struck by a covered van in Cumilla's Chandina.

The upazila’s Gomta Ishakiya High School’s students blocked the four-lane highway in front of the school on Monday morning for about one and a half hours, causing traffic jams on both sides of the roads.

They started protesting around 10:15am, demanding a fair trial. Later, when Chandina Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tapas Sheel appeared at the scene and assured to meet their demand, the students withdrew the protest around 11:30am.

The school's executive committee member Ruhul Amin said, “Jewel Rana, the science teacher of the school, Mohibul Hasan and Zahid Hasan, the eighth-grade students, were returning home after school on Sunday afternoon.

“On reaching the Daranipara area of the highway, a Chattogram bound BRTC covered van lost control and hit them on the unpaved road.”

“Among the injured, teacher Jewel and student Zahid were rushed to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Dhaka in severe condition. Another student Mahibul Hasan was treated at Chandina Upazila Health Complex,” Ruhul added.
