Splashes of heavy rain inundated many parts of Dhaka on Saturday afternoon triggering traffic congestions at key streets in the city.

The rain started at around 2:00pm with thunderstrikes and lasted for almost an hour with on and off splashes.

However, the rain brought some relief for the city dwellers as Dhaka and its neighbouring areas had been experiencing sweltering heat in recent days.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department recorded 52mm of rains during the period.

The accumulating rainwater quickly flooded the streets of Moghbazar, Malibagh, Banasree, Hatirjheel, Mirpur and Pallabi area with ankle-deep water, mounting suffering to residents, commuters and pedestrians.

Besides, Pallabi and Mirpur areas were in a sorry state as major construction projects added to the misery of the commuters.

A number of vehicles were stranded on various streets due to waterlogging.

Light to moderate rain, thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at many places over Khulna, Barishal & Chattogram divisions and at one or two places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh & Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at isolated places over the southern part of the country, forecasted BMD.

Besides, a low-pressure area formed over East Central Bay and adjoining area was intensified into a well-marked low over East Central Bay and adjoining northeast Bay and then intensified into a depression and further intensified into a deep depression over the same area.

It is likely to intensify further and move in a west-northwesterly direction, said the Met office in its forecast.
