Suspected Indian female extremist placed on 4-day remand

A Dhaka court has placed Ayesha Jannat Mohona alias Jannatut Tasnim alias Progga Debnath, a 25-year-old Indian citizen, on four-day remand for her alleged involvement with the women’s wing of banned militant group Neo Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen (JMB).

The virtual court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Masudur Rahman passed the order.

Investigation Officer submitted a petition seeking a seven-day remand to grill Ayesha in their custody, the court, however, allowed a four-day remand on Friday (July 17).

Earlier on 16 July, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) branch of Bangladesh police arrested her from Dhaka’s Sadarghat area.

According to CTTC officials, the girl, identified as Ayesha Jannat Mohona, is an Indian national and an Indian passport was found in her possession.

“The arrest was made in connection with an earlier case registered at Motijheel police station. We have produced her before the court and she has been remanded to four days of police custody,” Sheikh Imran Hossain, Assistant commissioner, CTTC said in a media briefing.

Initial investigation by CTTC officials have found that Ayesha hails from West Bengal’s Hooghly district. Her roots have been traced to the Keshabpur village under Dhaniakhali police station limits.

In the year of 2009, she converted to Islam though he was born Hindu as Progga Debnath.

During her online religious lessons, she got in touch with the women’s wing chief, Asma Khatoon and from 2009 till 2016 Ayesha got actively involved in neo JMB women’s wing.

The CTTC officials will interrogate the accused over the next four days to nab her associates.

Suspected Indian female extremist Ayesha even procured a fake Bangladeshi birth certificate and a fake national identity card of Bangladesh.
