Dr Syed Ferhat Anwar has taken on chairman responsibilities of the newly formed board of directors at National Bank Ltd (NBL), in accordance with the recommendation of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission, and approval from the Bangladesh Bank.

On Wednesday, he presided over the 491st meeting of the newly formed board of directors. Other directors, along with independent directors, were present at the meeting.

With over 35 years of teaching experience and a distinguished career as the former Director of IBA at the University of Dhaka, Dr Ferhat has been recognised for his significant contributions to education, read a press release.

He played a crucial role in establishing various private and public universities, including North South University, East West University, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), and United International University.

Dr Ferhat holds a PhD in Marketing Systems from the University of New Brunswick, Canada, and Dhaka University, and has authored more than 70 publications.

Last week, the Bangladesh Bank dissolved the board of National Bank Ltd (NBL) – the country’s first generation private sector bank – which has long been mired in allegations of lacking good governance, failure to disburse loans, and inability to preserve deposits.

Considering the interest of depositors, and recommendations from the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) for several reasons, including approving loans in violation of regulations, abuse of power by the board of directors, and election of directors, the central bank made the move on Thursday last week.
