The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has increased the prices of sugar and lentil by Tk 5 per kg, when the prices of essential commodities are already spiralling out of the low-income people’s reach.

As a result of this new hike, sugar will now be sold at Tk 60 and lentils at Tk 70 per kg, while the price of soybean oil will remain unchanged at Tk 110 per litre, read a TCB press release published Tuesday.

Regarding the price hike, TCB spokesperson Humayun Kabir said the prices of sugar and lentils have been increased to align with the market price, which has increased recently.

Commerce Ministry Senior Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh will formally inaugurate the sales programme for December at the Mohakhali Community Centre on Wednesday morning.

The sales programme will start countrywide with the aim of selling three items– sugar, lentils, and soybean oil– at subsidised prices among one crore families with QR code-enabled ration cards provided by the TCB.

Under the programme, a cardholder can buy a maximum of two litres of soybean oil, two kg of lentils, and one kg of sugar from TCB-appointed dealers’ shops or designated sale points.
