Workers of Sonargaon Textile Mill in Barishal blocked the Dhaka-Patuakhali Highway in front of their factory for an hour on Sunday protesting the recent layoff and demanding arrears and salaries.
Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the highway in the afternoon, causing suffering to the travellers.
Later, the workers withdrew the blockade after the factory authorities assured them of reopening the factory on August 1 and payment of their dues.
The workers' leaders threatened to launch stronger protests if the authorities do not act as per their assurances within the stipulated time, Sonargaon Textile Workers- Employees' Movement Council President Masum Gazi said.
Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) district unit Member Secretary Manisha Chakraborty, Samajtantrik Sramik Front district unit Office Secretary Shahidul Islam, member Santu Mitra, Sonargaon Textile Workers-Employees' Movement Council President Masum Gazi and General Secretary Md Imran were present on the occasion.
