Journalists from The Business Post and Dainik Amader Shomoy gathered on Wednesday to form a human chain, protesting the killing of The Business Post’s Graphic Designer, Md Atiqur Rahman.

The demonstration, held at around 4pm in the office premises of the two newspapers in Tejgaon, demanded justice and the exemplary punishment of those responsible for Atiqur’s untimely death. The protest saw the participation of journalists, administrative staff, and media personnel from various sectors, all united in their call for accountability and justice for their colleague.

Md Atiqur Rahman, a veteran member of The Business Post’s production team, tragically lost his life during Monday’s unrest in Dhaka.

Mainul Alam, the executive editor of The Business Post and Dainik Amader Shomoy, addressed the demonstration with profound sorrow, stating, "With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, we have taken to the streets today.

“We have lost a highly skilled and valued colleague who fell victim to the chaos, violence, and conflict plaguing our country. We demand that the interim government, which will soon assume power, thoroughly investigate Atiqur's murder and bring the perpetrators to justice. No other journalist or citizen should have to face such a tragic fate," he added.

Referring to Atiqur as a martyr, the senior newsman added, "Today, we pledge to honour Atiqur's dreams through our work. His family is now left without a guardian, and the state must take responsibility for their well-being."

Addressing the newly appointed police administration, he urged, "We call on the police to restore law and order and ensure the safety of the people. Security for every media outlet must be a priority."

During the human chain protest, several prominent journalists delivered speeches, including Dainik Amader Shomoy News Editor Ashraful Islam; The Business Post Deputy Chief Reporter Muhammad Farhad Hossain Talukdar; The Business Post Stock Page In-Charge Niaz Mahmud; and The Business Post Graphic In-Charge Mahbub Alam.

Atiqur Rahman left his home in the capital’s Shanir Akhra at around 11am on Monday and then went missing. After a frantic search across the city, his family tragically discovered his body in the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 10pm that night.

According to his family, Atiqur was shot in the head and died instantly near Shanir Akhra Ideal School at around 1pm on Monday. They demand justice for his brutal killing and recognition of his sacrifice, honouring him as a martyr for his country.

Md Atiqur Rahman is survived by his wife, two children, parents, and younger brother. He was laid to rest in his native home in Barishal following a Namaz-e-Janaza on Tuesday morning.
