Compensation worth over Taka 1.5 crore has, so far, been realised through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in the district during the current fiscal.

District Legal Aid Committee (DLAC) received 1,262 applications and resolved 1,108 of those realising Taka 1.50 crore as compensations.

These were revealed in a post-rally discussion to mark the observance of the National Legal Aid Day-2023 held at the premises of Rajshahi Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Friday.

The meeting was told that the DLAC extended aid to 13,933 cases and 10,903 of those have been disposed of since 2016. The ADR system has been contributing a lot towards lessening the case-jam in courts.

DLAC arranged discussion, colourful rally, free medical camp and blood donation programmes in observance of the day.

Metropolitan Session Judge Al Asad Asifuzzaman addressed the meeting as chief guest, while Senior District and Session Judge and DLAC Chairman Abdur Rahim were in the chair.

In his remarks, Judge Abdur Rahim called upon lawyers and others concerned to be more sincere for ensuring legal aids to the grassroots poor, distressed and other litigants as all people are equal to the eye of law.

“So, all people should have access to legal aid coverage whenever they need,” he added.

Legal aid related cases should be prioritised to ensure speedy disposal for the greater interest of the distressed and poor people.

Metropolitan Session Judge Al Asad Asifuzzaman emphasised the need for concerted efforts of all quarters to ensure access to justice for the distressed and disadvantaged people.

He viewed that infusing dynamism in the legal aid services could be the effective means of attaining the cherished goal.

Judge Asifuzzaman said only the judiciary or any other organisation is not sufficient to ensure legal aid to the underprivileged people, but a comprehensive effort is essential in this regard.
