Detectives have recovered more Tk 2,53,99,000 and arrested eight people over the looting of Tk 11.25 crore of Dutch-Bangla Bank Ltd from a security company microbus in the capital’s Uttara.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Deputy Commissioner Harun-Or-Rashid, also the chief of the Detective Branch, made the disclosure at a press briefing held at the DMP media centre on Sunday.

With the fresh recovery, a total of Tk 6,43,49,000 has been covered in the incident although the DB chief earlier claimed that they recovered about Tk 9 crore a few hours after the looting took place on Thursday morning.

On Sunday’s briefing, Harun said the law enforces raided different areas, including Mirpur and Banani in Dhaka and Sunamganj, on Saturday and recovered the cash. They also apprehended the eight people during the raids, he said.

Meanwhile, the case filed in connection with the looting of the money has been transferred to the Detective Branch of police, he added.

On Thursday night, Alamgir Hossain, director of Money Plant Link (Pvt) Ltd, the security company that was transporting the money, lodged the case accusing 10 to 12 unnamed people with Turag police station.

Police detained seven people, including two directors of Money Plant, for questioning hours after the incident. They were released later.

On Thursday evening, DB chief Harun told reporters that the Money Plant microbus had started its journey from Mirpur 12 in the morning and the robbers, who were in another microbus, intercepted it in Uttara when it was on its way to Savar.

He said there were six people in the Money Plant vehicle. “The robbers beat them up, moved four trunks of money to their own microbus, and fled.”

Harun said a DB team immediately went to the spot after receiving the information and patrols were conducted in different parts of the capital.

With the help of officials in various police stations, the detectives started working to recover the money and catch the robbers, he said.

The DB official further said the robbers had been following the company’s transportation of money for a long time, adding they were not armed during the crime.
