Total lockdown in Dhaka: HC to deliver order on Monday

The High Court will deliver its order on Monday on a writ petition filed seeking its directives on the government as to putting the entire Dhaka city in lockdown immediately.

The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim fixed the date for passing the directive after concluding hearing on the writ petition today through a virtual system.

Supreme Court Advocate Manzil Morshed was present on behalf of the writ petitioner while additional attorney general Murad Reza represented the state.

Manzil Morshed said that the court said the way people are gathering in the market seems like there is no pandemic in the country. The court also urged all the people of the country to work for raising awareness about Covid-19.

Earlier on June 11, 2020, Manzil Morshed requested through a petition to the HC to order the authorities concerned to ensure that city dweller stay home, and that food and medicine are provided to poor people through local representatives during the pandemic.

The cabinet secretary, secretary of health, secretary of finance, secretary at prime minister's secretariat, director general of health division, two additional secretaries of the Health Ministry (hospitals and administration), police commissioner, director general of RAB, and mayors of two city corporations of Dhaka were made defendants in the writ.

The writ petition seeks directions from the defendants to enforce a complete lockdown in Dhaka.
