Fire-affected traders of the Bangabazar market on Wednesday resumed their businesses, setting up makeshift stalls on the ground.
While inaugurating the business activities, Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Fazle Noor Taposh announced that the city corporation will provide Tk 2 crore as assistance to rehabilitate the affected traders.
Taposh also assured that the corporation would continue its support to all small traders so that they can resume their business activities in full swing.
Member of Parliament Rashed Khan Menon, DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md Mizanur Rahman, Dhaka city (south) Awami League Joint General Secretary Kazi Morshed Hossain Kamal, Bangladesh Shop Owners' Association President Md Helal Uddin and DSCC secretary Akramuzzaman, among others, were present there.
The shop owners resumed their business activities in the morning by setting up wooden "chowkis" (tables) to display their garment products. Large umbrellas have also been set up to protect shop owners and buyers from the scorching sun.
In the morning, the DSCC's revenue and property department measured the market space to set up a chain and a row of "chowkis" for shop owners.
DSCC has already cleared the waste, including burnt goods, from the site and laid bricks and dumped sand to make the site ready for business activities.
Talking to the media earlier, Bangabazar Shop Owners' Association General Secretary Zahirul Islam said every shop owner would get space for a shop to run trading.
On April 4, a devastating fire burnt down Bangabazar market, destroying at least 3,500 shops.
