A court on Monday imposed a travel ban on former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed and his wife Rukmila Zaman over massive graft allegations.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammed Ash Shams Joglul came up with the order as the court allowed a plea of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), reports BSS.
Saifuzzaman is accused of amassing and laundering billions to different foreign states, especially the United Kingdom. The anti-graft body in its plea said the former land minister has allegedly bought 350 properties in the UK, 228 in UAE and nine in the US in his name and the names of his family members.
"According to different records, it appears that Saifuzzaman through the graft money made huge properties in the country as well. From reliable sources, we are assuming that the accused and his wife may try to escape the country. So, a travel ban should be imposed on them for the sake of proper investigation," the ACC plea said.
ACC Deputy Director Ram Prasad Mondal filed the plea, while Public Prosecutor Mir Ahmed Ali Salam moved the petition before the court.
Meanwhile, the same court on Monday imposed a travel ban on former chairman of Padma Bank Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat over graft allegations.
