Former vice-president of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) and lawmaker Akhtaruzzaman said the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) authority has the right to determine what the BUET ordinance and policy will be.

He added that an environment needed where BUET students will attend classes, take exams, and participate in politics when required. BUET student council will not be like that of Dhaka University.

Current issues should be resolved through discussion with all parties, including students and teachers.

In the last five years, there have been many successes in politics-free BUET. However, the students of BUET have shown achievements in home and abroad despite campus politics in the past. We want a student council, but we do not want a student council mired in fights.

Student politics is not just about a few slogans. The trend of student politics should change. Today's student politics should aim to keep pace with global technology with the help of artificial intelligence to prepare for the challenges of the fourth industrial revolution.

It is a bad example to be forced to attend rally meetings as a party worker by promising hall seats after university admission. The National Parliament can also contribute to what will be the trend of current student politics, Akhtaruzzaman said.

Ex-VP of DUCSU Akhtaruzzaman made the remarks as chief guest while addressing a Shadow Parliament debate competition, organised by the Debate for Democracy in the city’s FDC on Saturday.

Debate for Democracy Chairman Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiran presided over the event.

Kiran said at the event, “We have to wait for a few more days to understand whether there will be student politics in BUET as per the order of the court, or whether the BUET authorities will present the opinions of ordinary students to the court.

“However, the BUET authorities can organise a poll with all the students before presenting to the court whether there will be student politics in BUET. We hope that when the results of the vote are presented to the court, a solution to the ongoing crisis of BUET will emerge.”

As a specialised university, a non-political student cabinet can be formed in BUET to develop student leadership and achieve fair demands.

Primeasia University debaters won by defeating Stamford University Bangladesh debaters in the Shadow Parliament organised by Debate for Democracy titled “Student Politics as a Supportive Environment for Education.”

The competition judge was Professor Abu Muhammad Rais, Dr SM Morshed, Journalist Mustafa Kamal Mallick, Journalist Mahbub Kabir Chapal and Journalist Shamima Sultana. Trophies, crests and certificates were awarded to the winning team at the end of the event.
