Bangladesh, Turkey can explore greater def co-op: Hasan

Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud on Tuesday said the current state of defence cooperation between Bangladesh and Türkiye is "very promising" and suggested that both sides should "explore more areas" of defence cooperation.

He expressed satisfaction at the recent increase of bilateral trade and stressed on working towards further increasing the volume of bilateral trade.

Ambassador of Türkiye to Bangladesh Ramis Sen met the foreign minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).

He thanked Ankara for the solidarity and support at ICJ on the Rohingya issue and expressed his hope that Türkiye will continue to stand by Bangladesh on the issue of Rohingyas in all international forums.  

Hsan assured the ambassador will receive full cooperation during his tenure and expressed hope that bilateral relations between the two countries will further strengthen in coming days.

During the meeting, the foreign minister expressed satisfaction over the current state of relations and celebration of 50 years of the establishment of our diplomatic relations with Türkiye, according to the MoFA.

He thanked the president and foreign minister of Türkiye for their congratulatory letters sent to the prime minister and foreign minister of Bangladesh after the election.

The foreign minister emphasised the importance of holding regular political consultations and expressed hope that the 4th round of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) between the two countries will be held soon.

In a separate meeting with Hasan, the Italian Ambassador Antonio Alessandro expressed interest in taking more Bangladeshi citizens in Italy through the legal immigration process.
 
Terming relations with Bangladesh special, the Italian ambassador said that around 200,000 Bangladeshi expatriates are residing there and they are playing a positive role in the economy of both countries.

During the meeting, the foreign minister sought Italy's cooperation in the country's leather, automobile, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sectors.

Both the foreign minister and ambassador recalled Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's bilateral visit to Italy in 2020 and the meeting with the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization conference in 2023.

In addition, Hasan proposed for boosting trade and investment between Bangladesh-Italy and the Italian envoy put emphasis on establishing a Joint Chamber and Commerce.
