UITS celebrates World Pharmacists Day

The Pharmacy Department at the University of Information Technology and Sciences (UITS), the first IT and science-based private university in the country, celebrated World Pharmacists Day 2023 through a weeklong programme.

This year's theme was "Pharmacy Strengthening Health Systems".

The programmes began on September 18 with a debate competition, Pharma Olympiad, career seminar, photography contest, and various indoor and outdoor games.

The concluding ceremony began on Monday with a rally, followed by a meeting and prize distribution ceremony at Ratnagarbha Tahmina Rahman Multipurpose Auditorium of the university.

UITS Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Abu Hasan Bhuiyan attended the ceremony as the chief guest while Treasurer Professor Dr Siraj Uddin Ahmed, Dean of Faculty of Science and Engineering, Professor Dr Md Ashraful Islam, and Registrar Mokammel Hossain as the special guests.

Presided over by head of department associate professor Md Mofazzal Hossain, the meeting was attended by the teachers and students of Pharmacy Department.

In his speech, VC Prof Dr. Abu Hasan Bhuiyan mentioned the indispensable role of pharmacists in the health sector and said that pharmacists play an important role in fulfilling the basic needs of people by producing quality medicines.

He also urged pharmacists to work for the welfare of humanity, citing the philanthropic work of university's founder Alhaj Sufi Mohamed Mizanur Rahman.

Prof Dr Siraj Uddin Ahmed said that as pharmacists produce life-saving medicines, they should work sincerely for the country and the people of the country.

Dean of Faculty of Science and Engineering Prof Dr Mohammad Ashraful Islam in his speech advised and encouraged all the students to focus on research.

In his concluding remarks, head of department Md Mofazzal Hossain highlighted the challenges that Bangladesh may face with patent-related issues after the country’s graduation from LDC status. He also discussed how far Bangladesh is going in addressing the challenges of the 21st century.

He said that the presence of pharmacists is essential for a patient to receive complete care or to be cured. He explained how the effectiveness of a medicine can be lost due to a lack of proper guidance or advice on the storage and administration of medicines.
