Underground rail construction to begin in March 2022

The construction work for underground metro rail in Dhaka will begin in March 2022. It will be the first subway project in the country which will be implemented under MRT-1 project.

Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) Managing Director MAN Siddique revealed the information at an online press conference on Thursday.

Siddique said that as part of the broad project, a depot will be constructed first and then the rest of the infrastructure will follow. He said that authorities plan to open the line for passenger transport in 2026.

Tender for the project has already been floated and the tender process will be concluded by September, he added. Construction work for the depot will begin in Rupganj within six months, Siddique said.

The government plans to purchase 25 trains all of which will carry eight coaches, he said. Each train will have the capacity to carry 3,088 passengers at a time and eight lakh passengers will commute through the subway every day, MAN Siddique added.
